Another pic...

This is an attempt to post a better picture of myself. I hope it actually comes out better. The 2 things I have to say are that my hair is not that short and not that straight...
Edit: AAARGH!!!! It didn't work!!!! Never mind, I have no patience for this now. I'll deal with it another time.

Weekly Update

Well after I put all the details in the Eilat post, I don't think I have much to say, because not much else happened (or had time to happen this week), other than... IT'S CHANUKAH!
Have a good week!

Eilat

So, for the first time this year, like all traditional Efratians do on Chanukah, my family packed up and went to Eilat for a few days. We left on Monday, right after school and got back tonight. It was a lot of fun, and I didn't run into too many people I know...
I have to say, the first thing I thought when I got there was that it reminded me of Las Vegas. I was there two summers ago, and certain parts of our very picturesque hotel just made me feel like I was inside the Paris hotel again.
So what did we do? A hike, an IMAX 3-D movie, the aquarium and its extra activities, a lot of hanging out at the hotel's own fake beach, and some sand dunes on the way up.
I think that covers it. Chag Sameach!

How was your week?

So after a long series of slow weeks, this week I had a late night almost every night:
  • I got my first digital camera. Finally!
  • I saw Harry Potter 4 and loved it.
  • I saw Les Miserables and... OK'ed it.
  • We had an "Erev Kita"- a class get-together after school- tonight.
  • 2 tests...
  • Check this out: http://www.flowgo.com/index.cfm?action=view&id=12580&scid=0 - I just randomly came across it and thought it was cute... for HP freaks (like myself, in case you had any doubts) or people who like to make fun of HP...

Have a good week and a great Chanukah!

Les Miserables

Well, I can't believe I'm actually posting about this. But never mind that...
Tonight I went with my mother and sisters to Hebrew U's Hillel House production of Les Miserables, and I didn't hate it. I'd never seen it before and I had no intention of doing so, but my mother wanted us to go so we went.
The plot was OK but I think any story that has two people alive at the end is a bit tragic. Just a bit. The music was not really to my taste, but that's what it is.
The cast was very good, especially considering that this was a little university production. And we got there and found out that one of my (many) 2nd cousins was actually in it.
I don't feel the need to see it again, but at least now I can say I've seen the world's most popular musica.

Harry Potter 4!

Well, I finally did it. I saw Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire today. I loved it!!!! I have never raved about a HP movie like I raved about this one. I seriously had a desire to go right back into the theater and watch it again. I just can’t get over it. I never felt so much emotion in a HP movie, and I applaud everyone involved for that. It probably has to do with the fact that this movie has the first death, but it was just so good! Of course, if you asked me to criticize it I would go on and on, most of the criticism focusing on Michael Gambon (Dumbledore) who is just too cold. I’m really worried about his character in the next movies- I just can’t see him doing it well. I loved what they did to Cedric, how they emphasized his nice personality (which I never really noticed that well in the books) so it would be sad when he died. And on a similar note, I was really disappointed at Sirius’ absence- what was that all about??? The rest of the actors did a good job, though I didn’t get why everyone was raving about Ralph Fiennes (Voldemort). All that said, I think my favorite part was when Dumbledore said you have to be 17 to enter the Tournament. I just turned 17 yesterday, and I was with a friend who also had her 17th birthday last month.
And I just had to point out, if you haven’t read the book, DON’T SEE THE MOVIE! The girl next to me hadn’t read it, so she was always asking her friend questions and pretty much driving me crazy.

Happy Birthday to... me!

Yes, today I am 17.
In addition to our traditional dinner out which we pushed off till next week, my mother made my favorite for dinner tonight- fettucini alfredo, and a cake.
But what really made my day was this: When my mother was at the library today with my little brothers, she noticed a book which was my absolute favorite when I was about 5: Laura Charlotte by Kathryn O. Galbraith. So she took it out for me, and I was positively over the moon.

That was my birthday.

Another week's gone by...

  • Shabbat Irgun was a lot of fun! And I didn't even stay up too late...
  • Some tests...
  • A birthday card from Jo Rowling.
  • Taking 4 hours to get home.
  • We have a ton of guests for Shabbat!
  • My birthday's on Sunday!

Have a good week!

4 hours to get home!

I left school at 4 today. School is a 1/2 hour ride from home, except that I didn't have a ride today. When I don't have a ride, I take the 21 bus to the Central Bus Station and from there take the 5:00 bus to Efrat and get home at 6:00. So I was waiting for the bus, and around 4:40 they announced that there was something that looks like a car bomb on the road to Efrat, the road was closed and would likely not be opened for about 3 hours. So before doing any research, I called a friend of mine in Yerushalayim. I knew she was planning on going to the new Harry Potter movie which I haven't seen yet and really want to, so it wouldn't be a big deal if I joined her for that. She said I would be welcome to come with her but they were going to the 7:30 movie. I then proceeded to do more research about whether or not to go home. I found someone to ask and was told the buses would still be running, but taking different roads which would obviously take more time. So I scratched the movie idea and planned on taking the 5:00 bus. The bus came at 5:45 because it took that long to get to the station, just when I was about to consider finding a better way to get home. I got on the bus, and it did its regular route but then went a different direction to get to Efrat. We were on the bus for 2 hours, crawling most of the time, and I walked into the house at 8:00.

Look what I got!!!

6 days before my birthday, I checked my e-mail and found out I got an e-card from none other than Jo Rowling. For those of you who may not know, I am a huge fan of hers. How cool is that?

The week that was...

  • A lot of studying... 2 big tests this week and another one this Monday that I really need to do well on.
  • Shabbat Irgun is this weekend! I'll be up till ? A.M. in the Snif (Ezra Efrat) tonight, and I'll be there tomorrow night and after Shabbat.
  • Oh, and we think the mice are gone. Bli Ayin Hara...

Well, this was definitely not a slow week, but there wasn't much besides studying...

Have a great week! :-)

Mice!

Yes, my house has mice. We caught one this morning in a mousetrap, but we don't know if we have more. Meanwhile, I'm becoming really paranoid. I seem to think there is a mouse in my room, and I'm scared to be too quiet, because if the mouse comes out or makes noise on the assumption that there is nobody awake in the room, I will freak out. And I'm convinced that something inside the walls was keeping me up around 2 A.M. last night, but I may have been dreaming...
We have 2 mousetraps where droppings have appeared, and the exterminator's coming tomorrow. I would really love to be rid of them...

The past week...

  • I've been writing...
  • I've been going to sleep later and I'm not thrilled about that. Thank Goodness I don't have school tomorrow...
  • Kislev and December both start this week! I can already smell Chanukah, and my birthday isn't too far off either!

Oh, well. It appears I've had another slow week. Have a good week!

What happened this week?

  • Another math test...
  • An eye doctor appointment, I don't need glasses yet, I may need them later and I should continue with my vision therapy.
  • I was on a very well-done tour of Mt. Herzl (Jerusalem's military cemetery)

Apparently the week was a bit empty... Have a good one!

Weekly Update

I just decided to post a review of the week every Thursday or Friday. Let's see if I can keep this up and actually post every week...
What happened this week?
  • We had a "Shabbat Ulpana" which is a school Shabbat. It was a lot of fun, except for the sad realization that we only have 4 Shabbatot to go until we graduate...
  • I went to Yad Vashem to work on a paper on the Holocaust, but didn't find any material there on the topic I needed. On the other hand, I did come to the conclusion I have all the material I need so it shouldn't be so bad...
  • I started trigonometry! As far as I'm concerned, trigonometry was always the really hard stuff that the really old high school students did... and now I'm doing it!
  • Tamar's Corner came out of the shadows...

So I have a chemistry test tomorrow and I'm home for Shabbat. Have a good week, everyone!

This is a test!

I'm trying to post a picture to my profile, and I found out I can only do that through posting it on the blog. So you can all enjoy staring at this beautiful picture of me! ;-) Posted by Picasa

Guess what? (Tee hee)

Remember Lucy the guinea pig, my favorite pet? So every Friday my father has to clean out her cage in the backyard, and the 3 of my siblings who don't hate her watch her to make sure she doesn't run away. Except that she did run away. At the edge of our backyard there is a fence and then a drop onto an unpaved path. She's hiding somewhere in the rocks, refusing to come out. My father dug a hole so she can get to our yard from where she is, but she's ignoring that. She's still there, and she's been there since Friday. We don't know if she'll ever come out... I vote to get a non-pregnant guinea pig after she's officially gone.
Edit: See, I just post this and then they get her back! Not that it makes a difference to me...

I'm done!

It's over! This morning, I got up super-early again and went to the recruitment office. After the soldiers there were done going about their business and ignoring me, one of them called me into her office and I was out of there in about 2 minutes. She said to expect the actual exemption notice in the mail. I'm done, and it feels good!

Oy, what a looong day...

6:00 AM Wake up.
6:45 AM Get on bus to Yerushalayim.
7:30 AM Get off bus, walk to Rabbinical Court.
7:40 AM Attempt to go into the court, get told by the guards that it opens at 8:30. Get asked by a man who's waiting outside if I want to join a list of people waiting for the court. I sign (#2 on the list) but don't really believe people will follow it. I've heard the court can get very crowded and the wait can be very long.
8:30 AM Enter the court which is still pretty empty, go through security. I sit down at a desk almost immediately. The clerk asks for my ID and the 39 shekels I owe her. I take out my wallet and ask her if she has change for 100 shekels. She doesn't. I ask people in the building if they have change and they don't. I leave the building and start going to the stores. Nobody has change because it's too early in the morning.
8:45 AM Find a change machine nearby, insert the 100 and get a downpour of coins. Hurry back to the court, hope the crowds haven't come yet. They haven't. Wait a bit for the clerk to come back, pay her, get the forms I need and directions to the rabbis I need to see. Go upstairs and wait.
8:55 AM Get in to the court. Give rabbi ID and papers. Rabbi looks at papers. Rabbi: Are you Shomer Shabbat? Me: Yes. Rabbi: Do you keep Kosher? Me: Yes. Rabbi signs papers and tells me to sign one of them. I sign. I go downstairs and wait a little longer.
9:10 AM Go back to clerk. She takes two of my papers and gives me the other. I am now officially exempt from going to the Israeli Army because I'm religious. I'm also thrilled to be done with it and to be able to get back to school in time for my math test.
9:30 AM Find stop for bus to school. Bus comes, and I realize I was waiting on the wrong side. I cross over and wait some more.
9:42 AM Recieve text message from Abba who's on business in England: "I'm glad my daughter is officially reliegious."
9:45 AM Get on bus.
10:04 AM Get off bus. Go into school, into classroom.
10:35 AM Test in 75 minutes. Everyone but me is stressed and doing last minute studying. I gave that up last night. I can't study anymore. I'm sick of math.
11:50 AM Test starts.
12:35 PM Test is going too well. I'm a bit worried, because this is the highest math level and this teacher usually gives killer tests. The questions are too easy.
12:50 PM I'm done with test and going over it. Nobody else is done. I don't want to hand test in yet.
1:oo PM Give up waiting and hand in test. Teacher looks it over and says it looks good. I'm still a bit scared because nobody else is showing signs of finishing.
1:05 PM Call the IDF Recruitment Office. Line is busy.
1:15 PM I'm really worried, because nobody from my math class has left the classroom yet. Other people are leaving other classrooms and complaining about what hard tests they had.
1:30 PM Test is officially over, and my classmates are leaving and of course discussing the test. Most of them seem to have had a hard time. That doesn't make me feel better.
1:50 PM Literature teacher is trying to teach us, or rather trying to have a discussion with us about a book we just read. Most of us can't stand that subject and we've just been through a math test. We're not having a good time right now.
2:45 PM We're about to start 3 hours of chemistry. Now I really love chiemistry, considering that I'm majoring in it, but we're learning some really tedious stuff right now and 3 classes straight at the end of the day is not a good thing.
2:50 PM My cell phone dies.
4:15 PM Trade SIM cards with someone to make some phone calls. I call the IDF again and get their answering machine which says their phone is only available until 5. Based on the booklet they sent me, I think the office is open until 7. I call home and tell Imma I'm going to go to the office after school to complete my exemption from the army, and that she shouldn't call me because my phone is dead.
5:10 PM School is over, finally. I have a ride home but I'm not taking it. I get on the bus and figure out how to get to the Recruitment Office.
5:30 PM Get off the bus and start walking toward the office. When I get closer I see a sign that's not really clear. Then I see some soldiers and ask them where it is. They tell me... it's closed. It's open from 7:30 to 5:00. I am annoyed, and I go back to the bus station.
6:00 PM Get on the bus to Efrat after almost missing it. I'm tired so I don't do anything on the bus but eat some cookies I have in my bag and listen to my iPod.
7:00 PM Get off bus. Go home and crash.
Lesson of the day: Trust your instincts. My instincts told me the office would be closed.
Complaint of the day: IDF: update your booklets!
Quote of the day: Sleep is the best coffee.
Anyway, now tomorrow I need to get up really early again and go to the office...

The longest time of the year approaches!

Well, today was the first day back after Succot. Now, there's no vacation at all until Chanukah, except for Fridays and Shabbatot.
Good luck everyone! I hope we survive it!

Winter is here!

Technically, it's winter! We start wishing people a good winter right after Simchat Torah, which is now.
I don't know about you, but my winter started yesterday, right before Simchat Torah. I came down with this cold/cough/sore throat/fever and basically stayed on the couch the whole time. So much for a fun Simchat Torah! I didn't go to shul or anything... :-(
Have a good winter! (...)

Intro and some other things...

I'm Tamar, and I just decided to start a blog. I've been considering doing this for awhile, but I always wondered if I would have time for this. Basically, I just haven't gotten around to it. But today, everything changed.
What's the change? Today, after my family's been in existence for 18 years, we just got our first pet. We are not pet people. We have never had anything except fish. Suddenly we have a guinea pig. A pregnant guinea pig. It sounded good before we got it, but now it's here and I have to say I'm rather annoyed. I've decided I don't like pets. So we got home, and I was in a rather bad mood because my sister was holding the guinea pig (Lucy) in the car, and I had to be sitting right next to her. I decided I need some cheering up, but how? Then it came to me. Why not start that long-awaited blog?
But, my initial reason for not wanting a blog still stands. Therefore, for awhile I will be posting only for myself. If I see that I really keep it up and post as often as I have something to post, then I will tell everyone that I have a blog. So if you check out this blog in a few days, weeks or however long it takes me, and see that I already have a bunch of posts here, it doesn't mean I forgot you. It just means I've been posting, and will continue to do so.
